Expand footprints in North-East India; Trained more than 10,000 street Food Vendors in the region
Nestlé India has collaborated with Food and Drug Administration, Mizoram, and National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) to launch Project Serve Safe Food in the state. As a part of the project, NASVI will train 100 street food vendors in the state. With the launch of the project in Mizoram, it now covers the entire North-East of India with more than 10,000 street food vendors been trained across the seven states.
Project ‘Serve Safe Food’ has already benefitted over 92,800 street food vendors across 26 states and 4 Union Territories by educating vendors on health, hygiene, safe food handling, waste disposal and entrepreneurship. The training programme equips vendors with the knowledge to improve their food handling practices.
K. Lalrinzuali, IAS, Commissioner of Food Safety, Food & Drug, Administration, Mizoram, said, “Mizoram has long been a tourists’ delight. From Aizawl's bustling markets, Reiek Mountain, and Phawngpui National Park, the state has been ideal for nature lovers, adventure, and sustainable travel. By further strengthening the food safety standards among our street food vendors, we would be elevating the stature of Mizoram as a tourist destination, while helping the confidence of locals in street food. I thank Nestlé India and NASVI for extending their support on this front and wish them success for this project.”
Kunwar Himmat Singh, Head, Sustainability and societal initiatives, Nestlé India said, “At Nestlé India, we strive to elevate food safety standards across the country—going beyond just our own products. Through Project Serve Safe Food, we empower street food vendors with practical training in hygiene and food safety, strengthening both skills and awareness. As we continue to scale the initiative, we are confident it will drive lasting behavioral change while supporting the growth and sustainability of their businesses.”
Nestlé India launched Project Serve Safe Food in 2016 and has trained street food vendors across states including Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Odisha, Puducherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
